There is still a little ice on Boomer Lake, but it is temporarily on its way out. Therefore, this has opened up the Southern Cove for feeding once again. Both herons were within a few feet from one another, and only Great Blue Heron had something to eat while I was there. Many Canvasbacks were on the southeast portion of Goose Island, which allowed an excellent photo opportunity with them, finally.

It was cold, make no doubts about that. It was a good day for Great Blue Herons at the Northern Reaches. The Rookery is active, as suspected, for they are thinking about pairing off. At one point, there were a half dozen GBHEs on the ice, some quite capable masters at navigation on that medium. Still others were scrambling for footing, and as can be noted, some of the dance movements were interesting.

The weather was a lot more palatable than yesterday, and we had a new visitor. This swan is from the Arctic, and I saw it fly in alone. This is another bird that made a long flight. I observed it resting on the ice for about an hour, it could have been even more. It was quite a distance from me, and when I go from the east side of the lake to the west side in hopes for a better shot, it is a big deal.

Yours Truly was out and about twice today, both morning and mid-afternoon. Snow touched down around 0400 hrs. today, and it was necessity to get out for the surprises that were in store. The tribe of Cackling Geese flew in from the Great White North due to lack of food, and came to Stillwater, OK, for a much deserved rest and a little sustenance. This event occurred in the neighborhood of 1445 hrs. and this was the first Snow Goose that I have seen this year, let alone be able to photograph.

This is the first day in several that I finally had the opportunity to get out to photograph. I almost felt like I had been imprisoned, without a purpose, for all those days. The light has been restored, and am am once again whole. See what happens when one turns to serious photography? I have truly been bitten.
